Time well spent in Covent Garden

Artspoken

Do you ever feel like you're bound to the clock and constantly trying to catch up with time? I know I certainly do. However this week I took time to take in a rather unique time-piece, which lives in the trendy area of St Giles in Central London.

Introducing the Neal's Yard Water Clock.

This was installed in 1982 as a way of attracting people to a wholefood store below. It was designed by clock enthusiasts : Tim Hunkin and Andy Plant. It was designed so that every hour water, which was stored in a water tank would flow down from the clock. Bells along the ladder would chime and each of the 6 figures used watering cans to tend to their plants.

There's an old school video of it in motion here.

The shop under the clock is currently being refurbished, hopefully they will also give some attention to this fascinating work of art. I didn't see it in motion this week, but the structure certainly got my attention.

Location :

21-23 Shorts Gardens, Covent Garden, WC2H 9AS. Nearest station: Covent Garden or Leicester Square.
